Bortolin captures silver at U SPORTS Championships

Angelo Bortolin stole the show for the Lancer track & field team on Saturday, capturing a silver medal in the men's triple jump to lead the blue and gold at the U SPORTS Championships this weekend at the University of Manitoba.
 
The Lancer men finished in the top ten, placing ninth overall with 29 points while the women finished eleventh with 20 total points.
 
Bortolin waited until his sixth and final jump to leap ahead of the field and setting a season's best distance with a jump of 14.62m to be named a U SPORTS all-Canadian.
 
Sesan Akerewusi opened up the championships with a fourth place finish in the men's 60m with a time of 6.87 seconds. The 4x800m relay team of Mitch Paterson, Andrew Nebel, Nick D'Alessandro, and Cole Hannam also placed fourth with a time of 7:38.87. Hannam also placed 5th overall in the men's 1000m with a time of 2:26.74.
 
Marcus Penaloza solidified his place in the Lancer record book on day two of the competition. The second year Lancer set a new personal best time of 33.66 seconds in the men's 300m to move into second on the Lancers all-time list, just .03 seconds behind record holder O'Brian Gibbons who set the record in 1994. The time placed Penaloza fifth overall in the race.
 
In the 4x400m relay, the team of Jarrod Cullen, Penaloza, Tanner Sleep, and Mitch Paterson finished the race tenth overall with a time of 3:23.87.
 
In the men's shot put, Zion Webb placed eighth while Anthony Atkinson finished 10th with throws of 15.21m and 14.71m, respectively. In the pole vault, Nojah Parker was seventh 4.65m.
 
On the women's side, rookie Mandy Brunet headed into the championship ranked fourth in the women's triple jump and finished exactly there with a leap of 11.76m. Taryn Lamorie also placed fourth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.73m. 
 
On the track, the 4x200m relay team of Kristy Hodgins, Lamorie, Kelly Hodgins, and Emma Floris also placed fourth with a time of 1:39.38. The 4x400m team of Hodgins, Hodgins, Kylie Stiel and Floris finished eighth overall with a time of 3:52.16.
