Amusan & Lozinski named athletes of the year

Lancer standouts Kolade Amusan and Megan Lozinski were awarded the Olympic and Banner Shields as the University of Windsor Athletes of the Year at the Windsor Lancers annual Evening of Excellence Tuesday at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

It was a remarkable year on the field for Amusan as he elevated his game to another level to solidify his place as one of the top defensive ends in the entire country.

As one of the most dominant defensive players in all of U SPORTS, Amusan led the country in total sacks with 11.5. His incredible play on the field saw him recognized as both a U SPORTS all-Canadian and an OUA first team all-star.

His presence on the field was a major reason why the Lancer defense finished the season ranked No. 2 in the country, and why opposing coaches raved about his play and how he affected their offensive game planning each week.

The Minnesota native's tremendous play also helped lead his team to a 6-2 finish and a top ten ranking in the nation.

It was an incredible senior year for Lozinski as she solidified her spot as one of the premier softball players in the province and one Lancer softball's best all-time players.

She differentiated herself from other players in the league with her ability to impact games both on the mound and at the plate.

As a dominant pitcher, Lozinski's command on the mound was instrumental to the Lancers' success, as she pitched 79 total innings and struck out 58 batters.

Her prowess at the plate was equally as important as she contributed significantly to the team's offensive efforts.

She was named an Ontario University Softball all-star for the third straight year, and she received multiple recognitions for outstanding single-game performances.

Truly an outstanding season and an outstanding Lancer career. Lozinski leaves a legacy as one of the most impactful Lancer softball student-athletes in program history.

The DeMarco Awards, presented annually to the top female and male students that best combine academic achievement with athletic prowess, went to Darian Koskie from men's volleyball and to Kat Campana from the women's soccer team.

The Eddi Chittaro Assistant Coach of the Year award went to Andrea Parr from women's soccer and Andrew Foster from women's volleyball, while the University of Windsor Gino Fracas Coach of the Year Award was presented to Jean-Paul Circelli from Lancer football.

It was truly a season to remember on the field for head coach JP Circelli and his Lancer football program as he helped guide the Lancers to their most successful season since 1975.

Coach Circelli's strong leadership and guidance got the best out of his Lancer squad this season, as he led them to a 6-2 conference record, a top 10 ranking in Canada and a third-place overall finish in the OUA.

The Lancers hosted their first home playoff game in over a decade and captured their first home playoff victory in 48 years with a thrilling quarter-final victory over the Carleton Ravens in front of a capacity crowd at Alumni Stadium.

Coach Circelli saw six members of his team recognized with OUA all-star honours this season, and three Lancers earning prestigious all-Canadian status.

The Lancers were ranked nationally throughout the year and finished the season as the ninth ranked team in the country.

The Captain's Trophy, awarded to a male and female captain who demonstrate outstanding leadership both on and off the field while also making a significant contribution to the overall success of their team, went to Ema Kralik from track & field, and Mason Kohn from men's hockey.

The female rookie of the year award went to Leah Tate from women's basketball, while Quintin Greenidge from men's volleyball won the male rookie of the year. Both recipients had outstanding rookie campaigns.

The Super Sophomore awards were presented to Aliah Admans from women's volleyball, Harley Martin from track & field, and Weagbe Mombo who is a two-sport athlete with football and track & field.

The "A" Award, marking major contributions to Lancer Athletics, went to Erin Zonta. This year's Richard Peddie Award was presented to Diane Rawlings, while the Moriarty academic team of the year was presented to the women's hockey team, and the IG Cup was awarded to football.
