Playoff Preview: OUA Football Quarter-final

The University of Windsor Lancers football team will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the quarter-final round of the 2025 OUA playoffs on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

The Lancers finished with a 5-3 (W-L) record this season, earning a third-place finish by taking down the Queen's Gaels on the final day of the regular season which gave them the tiebreaker over the Gaels.

The calling card of the Lancers this season was their defence, leading the OUA with the fewest total points allowed with 155. The blue and goal placed well ahead of the pack with 37 sacks, and finished tied for first with 13 interceptions. The Lancers yards, passing yards, and rushing yards allowed per game all ranked second in the province.

Ethan John's 42 solo tackles were the second-most in the OUA, with Marco Piccioni (30), Dylan Simpson (28), and Istvan Assibo-Dadzie (27) not far behind. Ahmad Taylor and Braxton Johnson were a duo to be reckoned with as the defensive lineman recorded 9.5 and nine sacks, respectively, to lead the province as a one-two punch. Derek Anderson's 5.5 sacks placed fourth and Liam Hoskins in tenth with four. Simpson tied for the league lead with four interceptions, and Assibo-Dadzie, Robert Springer, and Ethan Travis had two each.

Brady Lidster had a phenomenal season for the Lancers, setting franchise records for most field goals in a game, most field goals in a season, and most field goals in a career. The fourth-year kicker tied the OUA record for most field goals in a game with seven against Waterloo and now ranks third all-time in the OUA with 27 field goals in a single season, ahead of players who turned into CFL regulars such as Lewis Ward and Lirim Harjullahu.

Offensively, Lancer quarterback Nick Dimovski placed fifth in the OUA with a completion rate of 65.8%, and picked up 1857 passing yards in the process. The dual-threat QB ranked eighth overall with 358 rushing yards. Colby Ginn paced the receiving core with 426 yards and Evan Martin had 36 receptions.

The Lancers saw the most success on the ground this season, with the trio of Weagbe Mombo, Andrew Delaney, and Liam Talbot contributing to the running attack. Mombo's 789 rushing yards were third in the OUA, capped off by a 148-yard output on Saturday at Queen's, and his four touchdowns were only second to Dimovski's five. Talbot put up 102 yards in just three games after returning in the second half of the season. The bulk of Delaney's 191 yards came in the first half of the season, including a touchdown.

Unlike Windsor, the Gee-Gees attack will primarily come from the air. Quarterback Josh Janssen's 14 passing touchdowns were the third most in the province, and he led the league with 2526 passing yards. His 196 completions and 296 passing attempts were also the most in the OUA.

Noah Avery (51) and Robin Collioud (39) lead Ottawa in receptions, with Avery picking up 652 yards and Collioud 603.

Marc Djonay Rondeau (51.5) and Jaxxon Brashear (45.0) each ranked in the top five in total tackles. Riley Hildebrandt was a threat for opposing offenses with five sacks.

This marks the fourth consecutive season that the Lancers have made the playoffs. Last season, Windsor narrowly fell to the Gaels in the quarter-final. Their last playoff win came in 2023 at home versus the Carleton Ravens. The Lancers longest playoff run came in that same 2023 season, falling in the semifinal to the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Windsor and Ottawa most recently met in the playoffs in 2022, with the Lancers making their long-awaited return to the playoffs after an eight-year drought. That matchup saw the Gee-Gees come away with a 43-40 win.

The 4-4 Gee-Gees are looking to avenge their own quarter-final lost last season after falling 26-15 to the Guelph Gryphons. Ottawa has made the playoffs for eight straight seasons going back to 2016, getting all the way to the East final in 2021.

Tickets for the game will become available on Monday, October 20 at 11 a.m. and can be purchased at golancers.ca/tickets.
