HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels got on the board first with an early field goal by Tyler Mullan just five minutes into the semifinal game, and that score held for a back-and-forth first quarter that saw neither team come close to another score.
The game picked up in the second quarter, with
Kareame Cotton rushing for a short-yardage touchdown three and a half minutes into the quarter to put the Lancers up 7-3. Queen's responded with another field goal by Mullan and a touchdown by Nathan Falconi to take a 13-7 lead. The Gaels were close to taking that lead into halftime but the Lancers marched downfield on the backs of big runs by
Weagbe Mombo,
Andrew Delaney, and
Liam Talbot to the Gael one-yard line. Cotton punched in his second rushing touchdown of the day as time expired, and
Brady Lidster's extra point made it 14-13 Lancers at half.
An entertaining third quarter saw the Lancers take a 25-13 lead via two safeties and a
Colby Ginn touchdown pass with Cotton at quarterback that ignited the Lancer faithful at Alumni Stadium. Queen's answered with a deep touchdown pass by quarterback Alex Vreeken to receiver Logan Walton to make it a five-point game. Both teams battled it out as the clock bled down, with the strong Lancer defensive unit keeping a strong Queen's offense in check.
The Gaels scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a run by Jared Chisari. After Windsor conceded a safety, the Gaels put the game on ice with 43 seconds to play on another Chisari run into the endzone to give the Gaels a 36-25 win.
