Ten current and former University of Windsor Lancers were named award recipients at the 19th Annual Windsor/Essex Country Sports Persons of the Year (WESPY) Awards at the Caboto Club in Windsor, Ont. on Tuesday, April 21. The awards were awarded for the 2024-25 winter sport and 2025 fall sport season.

Men's volleyball standout Markus Law-Heese took home the male athlete of the year award and the male Tim Hommel volleyball award for his 2024-25 season that saw him win OUA Player of the Year, a U SPORTS first-team All-Canadian, and OUA first-team all-star as the Lancers made it to the U SPORTS Championship in Brandon, Man.

Current Lancer women's volleyball player Geneva Huisman was awarded the female Tim Hommel volleyball award for her 2024-25 season with the St. Clair Saints in which she recorded 200 kills across 60 sets in 17 games, hitting at a .412 percentage.

Frank Jeney, the head coach of the Lancer baseball program, was named the Ken Dryden executive of the year.

Samara Quanz and Jacob Fitzpatrick were named the female and male cross country award recipients, respectively. Quanz won individual bronze at the OUA Championships to help the women earn team silver, and Fitzpatrick placed fifth overall as the men finishes fourth. At the U SPORTS Championships, Quanz placed 14th as the women earned a ninth-place finish and Fitzpatrick finished 15th to help the men place seventh.

After setting multiple Lancer single-season and all-time kicking records as well as tying the OUA single-game field goal record, Lidster was named an OUA first-team all-star and U SPORTS first-team All-Canadian.

The male Dennis Fairall Track and Field Award went to Ben Tilson. Last track season, he won gold in the 600m and 4x400m at the OUA Championships. At U SPORTS, he claimed silver in the 600m.

The softball award was awarded to Jayde Melhuish-McGahan, who excelled both on the mound and at the plate for the Lancers, earning OUS all-star honours.

Nico Fontecha won the male Sasha Cirovski Soccer Award, who was named an OUA second-team all-star following a season in which he scored twice for the Lancers and set career highs in goals and assists while starting every game as second-year player.

The female Ed Jovanovski hockey award was given to former Lancer Maggie Peterson, who scored seven goals and 18 points in 2024-25 as she was named team MVP. Peterson is now playing professionally with the Lakers Kärnten, based in Ferlach, Austria, of the European Women's Hockey League (EWHL).
