Box Score 2 The Lancer women's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons in dramatic fashion 3-2 on Friday night in Guelph, before falling 1-0 to Brock in a hard fought battle on Saturday.
On Friday night in Guelph, the Gryphons did establish an early 2-0 lead but a valiant effort by the Lancers saw them claw back to take the home team into overtime and the eventual shoot-out win.
The first period of play saw the Gryphons dominate the Lancers, as they outshot Windsor 10-6. Guelph's Samantha Ryder found herself alone in front of Windsor netminder Jamie Tessier, she took a pass from the left boards and one-timed a shot past Tessier to give Guelph a 1-0 lead.
The Gryphons continued to pressure Windsor and with 6:18 remaining in the first, Tamara Bell picked up a loose puck and snapped it past Tessier for a 2-0 lead.
With less than three minutes left in the period with Guelph on the penalty kill it would seem as though the Gryphon ladies would make it 3-0, but a great effort saw Tessier shut the door on Dayna Kanis who came in all alone on a breakaway.
Before the period came to its conclusion though the Lancers were able to get on the board as Manon Davis scored on a wrap-around that saw the puck trickle in. Both teams headed to the locker rooms for the first intermission with the game at 2-1 Guelph.
The second period saw a rejuvenated Lancer squad take the ice and have a number of scoring opportunities.
Cynthia Lohnes made a beautiful pass to spring Davis in on a breakaway but Guelph goaltender Chelsey Roy was able to shut the door. Following this Lancers forward Kiely Barnett ripped a slapshot, beating Roy but not the post.
The third period saw great defensive play by both teams to go along with some nice chances. With just under thirteen minutes left in the game the were able to tie the game up. A nice slapper from the point by captain Kelly Meincke was redirected from a beautiful tip by third year forward Candace Rapchak to make the score 2-2.
Neither team was able to score throughout the remainder of regulation or overtime to send the game into a shootout.
After the first five shots were stopped by their respective goalies, Windsor had the final shot in the round. With their third shot, Stephanie Hebert was able to make turn some nice stick-handling into the shootout winner as her shot sailed past Roy and into the back of the net.
Tessier made 27 saves in the win, while Rapchak finished the game with a goal and an assist.
On Saturday Windsor dropped a 1-0 decision to the Brock Badgers on Saturday in St. Catharine's, ON.
After two scoreless periods, the Badgers' power play unit capitalized on a Lancer holding penalty three minutes into the period for the game's lone goal.
Jamie Tessier made 24 saves in the game, while Brock's Beth Clause turned away all of Windsor's 33 shots.
The Lancers return home next weekend as they host the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon and the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday. Both games are at 4:10pm at South Windsor Arena, home of Lancer women's hockey.
