The Lancer Women's Hockey team remained undefeated on the season with a pair of sweep wins over the York Lions and Toronto Varsity Blues.

With the victories, the Lancers are now 5-0 on the season and are only one of two teams who remain undefeated to start the season.

The Lancers and Laurier Golden Hawks are both at the top of the standings with perfect records.

On Saturday against York, the Lancers defeated the Lions 6-4 on York's home ice.

Special teams were the story of the game, with eight of 10 total goals coming on the power play.

In the first period, the No. 7 nationally-ranked Lancers opened the scoring on the power play with a goal by Candace Kourounis. Courtney Spoors threw a backhand shot on goal that Lions goaltender Jessalyn Bogacki got a piece of, but Kourounis was there to shovel home the bouncing puck.

The Lions tied the game five minutes later on a power play of their own. Lindsay Brook wristed a harmless looking shot towards the Lancers goal that Milano knocked down and through the legs of Lancer goaltender Jamie Tessier.

Bogacki made three huge stops on a penalty kill late in the period to keep the game tied 1-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period played out much like the first, with both teams scoring power play goals.

Manon Davis scored on a power play just three minutes into the period to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead. Davis got in alone behind the Lions defence, made a pretty move to her backhand and beat Bogacki up high.

The Lions found an equalizer on a power play just moments later. Katrina Tollis fired a shot on goal that bounced off Tessier's pad and onto the stick of Milano, who lifted the puck into the goal over a sprawling Tessier.

The home team's excitement was short-lived, however, as the Lancers added two more goals in the period. Spoors buried a power play goal off a well-placed slap pass by Kayla Dodson, and Krysten Bortolotti got an even-strength goal off a nice feed from Maxine Baronette on a 2-on-1 rush. Bortolotti received the pass, made a slick deke to her backhand and beat Bogacki up high to give the Lancers a 4-2 lead going into the second intermission.

Davis put to rest any chance of a Lions comeback in the first minute of the third period with her second goal of the game that proved to be the game winner. Davis found herself in the Lions zone with plenty of room to shoot and fired a shot into the top corner of Bogacki's goal, which gave the Lancers a 5-2 lead.

Play began to open up as the Lions aggressively pressed for goals, which resulted in three more goals before the end of the game.

The Lions made things interesting with two power play goals, one from Autumn Mills on a pretty redirection and another from Jennifer Petkovics, which cut the Lancers lead to just 5-4.

The Lancers, however, found their insurance goal less than one minute after Petkovics' tally on a cheeky tic-tac-toe play in front of the Lions goal that Kourounis finished for her second of the game.

Manon Davis's powerplay goal midway through the third period would prove to be the game-winner in the Lancers 5-4 win over Toronto on Sunday afternoon.

The Sudbury, Ont., native received a pass from Courtney Spoors in front of the net and roofed the puck over the glove of Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta.

Spoors opened the scoring with one-of-three Windsor powerplay goals midway through the first period. Varsity Blues player of the game Robyn Law of Markham, Ont., evened the score when she received a breakaway pass from Natalie Hughes and made no mistake, slipping the puck through the legs of Windsor goalie Jamie Tessier.

Stephanie Herbert scored after a scramble in front of Toronto's net to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead after the first period of play.

In what proved to be a penalty-filled affair, Toronto forward Brenley Jorgensen evened the score with a powerplay marker in the second period.

The third period saw five goals scored. Windsor built an early two-goal lead with a powerplay goal from Candace Rapchak before Spoors added her second of the game.

The Blues narrowed the gap when native Lindsay Hill picked off a Windsor pass, split the defence and put the puck past Tessier into the bottom left corner of the net.

After Davis extended the lead for good, Law notched her second goal of the game to bring the game within one. Despite a six-on-four advantage for 1:08, the Blues were unable to solve Tessier again.

The No. 7 Lancers will host the No. 2 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday October 30th at 4:10pm at South Windsor Arena. The winner of game will remain undefeated, while the other will suffer their first loss of the season.

Following Saturday's tough match-up the Lancers will host the Waterloo Warriors on Halloween afternoon at 4:10pm.
