Lancers drop opening weekend series to York in Toronto

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Windsor Lancers Men's Hockey team dropped two games to the York Lions in their season opening weekend in Toronto.

On Friday, the Lancers dropped a 5-2 decision to the host Lions.

Despite outshooting the Lions 41-32 on the night, the Lancers were unable to come away with the win on the road.

Windsor got off to a fast start in the opening period as newcomer Ryan Caicco scored his first career CIS goal only 8 minutes into the game to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Steve Ferry and Kyle Tront assisted on the goal.

York would bounce back with a pair of goals to seize the lead later in the period from Rob Labute and Mackenzie Micks.

The Lions would add another marker in the first minute on the second period to take a 3-1 lead.

The Lancers would bounce back less than two minutes later as another first year player, Mike Lombardi scored his first career CIS goal to cut the lead to one. Caicco and Kyle Lang assisted on the goal.

That would be as close as they would get as York added a pair of third period goals to seal the 5-2 victory.

Lancer goaltender Jim Watt made 27 saves in defeat.

In game two on Saturday afternoon, the Lancers were once again unable to find an answer to the York offensive attack, falling 3-2.

In a scoreless opening period, neither team was able to solve goaltenders Frank Dayus and David Blair.
The best scoring opportunity of the period came late in the period off a sharp passing play involving York's Jeff Matheson and Chad Hohmann, but Lancer netminder Dayus made a reflex save with his right pad to stop Hohmann's one timer, which kept the game knotted at 0-0.

In the second period, the Lions continued to dominate in the shot department, but the Lancers had the better scoring opportunities.

In the opening minutes of the period, Ryan Caicco threatened to put the Lancers on the scoresheet when he fired a bullet off Blair's right post that ricocheted into the corner.

Later in the period, Scott Todd snuck past the Lions defense and made a nice dangle with the puck in front of the Blair, who anticipated the move and shut the door on Todd.

Both teams had a multitude of two-on-one rushes in the second, but neither team could find the back of the net. Both Dayus and Blair were spectacular in net, leaving the scoreboard empty and both teams extremely frustrated.

The Lions also had a goal disallowed in the second to keep the score knotted at zero.

In the third period, the floodgates opened and tempers flared in what proved to be a thrilling finish to the game.

Windsor's MIke Lombardi opened the scoring early in the period that snuck past Blair's outstretched glove, giving Windsor a 1-0 lead.

York rebounded and found an equalizer only a few minutes later, and eventually took the lead on a power play goal that was blast past Dayus on the low blocker side.

The Lions then went ahead by two with a goal from Mackenzie Micks late in the period.

Late in the period, Lombardi scored his second of the game, and third of the season, on a breakaway to cut the Lions lead to just 3-2.

Unfortunately, the Lions maintained control of the puck for the final minute of play and the Lancers were unable to find the equalizer.

Dayus made 38 saves in the loss, as York out-shot the Lancers 41-24.

Windsor will open the home portion of their 2010-11 season next weekend with a doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Action kicks off on Friday night at 7:30pm, with game two being played on Saturday at 7:30pm. Both games are at Windsor Arena, home of Lancer men's hockey.
