Lancer Hockey drops weekend series to Gryphons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Lancer men's hockey team dropped a weekend series against the Guelph Gryphons with two consecutive losses to the Gryphons.

Windsor fell 3-1 Friday night before being held off the scoreboard on Saturday in a 3-0 loss in game two.

Windsor is now 4-5-1 on the season, and sits in a three way tie for 6th place in the OUA West standings.

On Friday night, the Lancers took an early lead to start the game. Catching Guelph on a line change, a deep cross-ice pass left Windsor all alone against Guelph goaltender Andrew Loverock. The first-year goaltender stood his ground and made a terrific save on the initial shot, but the puck would pop loose and streaking in behind the play, Lancer forward Danny Anger, chopped it past Loverock.

Despite the arguments from a few Guelph players when it appeared the net had come off prior to the marker, the goal was called good, and the Lancers took a 1-0 lead.

The Gryphons didn't let the early lead get them down though, answering the goal just over two minutes later on a patiently, developed play close to the Windsor net to knot the game 1-1.

Minutes later, the Gryphons took the 2-1 lead on a third effort by Cale Jefferies. After getting two hard shots on net, both giving up rather juicy rebounds, Jefferies got his stick on the puck and with Watt sprawled out on the ice, Jefferies roofed it on the Windsor netminder.

Both teams would remain off the scoresheet for the remainder of the first period and for the second period in its entirety.

In the third period it appeared as though Windsor might tie the game on a 2-on-1, but Loverock made an another incredible save to keep the Lancers down by one.

Guelph would notch an insurance marker midway through the period on a high-intensity scramble around the Windsor net.

Watt made 34 saves in the loss, while Loverock made 20 saves for the Gryphons.

For the second night in a row on Saturday, the Gryphons came out firing on all cylinders and proved to be too much for the Lancers.

Guelph took a 1-0 lead when Tim Priamo skated in on net from the faceoff circle to the right of Jim Watt. Keeping the puck glued to his stick, both Priamo and Watt waited for each other to make the first move. As Priamo crossed the top of the crease, Watt jumped back to cover the open net, but Priamo patiently waited until the last possible moment to tuck the puck just inside the post.

The Gryphons' 1-0 lead would be maintained for the remainder of the first period.

The second period played out much like the second frame of Friday night's game, with no scoring but high-intensity and aggressive play. Each team got their share of chances but strong goaltending from both sides kept the score at 1-0.

The Gryphons took an early two goal lead in the third period, before registering their third goal by the midway mark of the final period to secure the win.

Watt had another strong outing for the Lancers, registering the same stats as the night before with 34 saves on 37 shots.

Windsor will return home next Friday for the first of four home games. The Lancers will host the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night before hosting the York Lions on Saturday. Both games are 7:30pm starts at Windsor Arena, home of Lancer men's hockey.
