The Windsor Lancers Men's Hockey team will host the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night in a showdown at Windsor Arena.
The Lancers are currently 9-11-4 in conference play and sit in seventh spot in the OUA Western Conference.
The Mustangs come into Wednesday night's game with an 18-6-0 record and in first place in the conference standings.
Coach Hamlin's team is coming off a split on the road this past weekend in Oshawa and Guelph. Windsor earned a 6-1 victory over UOIT on Friday night before falling 3-2 on Saturday night to the Gryphons in Guelph.
Up front, the Lancers have continued to be led on the scoresheet by the trio of
Mark Thorburn,
Brett Oliphant and
Brett Vandehogen.
Thorburn, a second year forward from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and 19 points in 19 games.
Oliphant, also a second year forward from Woodslee, Ontario, has significantly increased his offensive production this season with 18 points in 21 games. Vandehogen leads the team in assists with 13 while also contributing 17 points this year.
In goal, the Lancers will need third year veteran
Jim Watt to play well over the final stretch if they are going to improve their playoff positioning. An OUA First Team All-Star last season, Watt has regained his form recently and will need to continue to come up big in the coming weeks.
For the Mustangs, they are coming off a pair of back to back losses in Thunder Bay to the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The pair of losses allowed Lakehead to pull even with the Mustangs at 36 points as the two teams are now tied for top spot in the OUA West.
"Teams within our conference are so good and the margin for error is so small that when you're not at your best, you can lose to anyone," said Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer.
Heading in Wednesday's game, the Mustangs have dropped four of their last six games, after reeling off 16 straight regular season victories.
The Mustangs have struggled since an injury to starting goaltender Anthony Grieco took him out of the lineup. Newcomer Josh Unice has struggled in net since joining the Mustangs after the holidays. The ex-Spitfire has won just once in his first five appearances while posting a .819% save percentage.
In the two previous meetings this season, the Mustangs defeated the Lancers 4-1 and 3-2 in overtime. Both games were on the road in London.
The Mustangs are led by Aaron Snow and Keaton Turkiewicz who sit fourth and fifth in the league scoring with 39 and 38 points respectivley.
Be sure to catch all the action on Wednesday night as the Lancers host the Mustangs at Windsor Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
