Box Score 2 The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team lost a pair of games in a weekend double header to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Windsor Arena.
In game one on Friday night, the Lancers were edged 4-3 to the No. 9 ranked team in the country.
Penalties hurt Windsor in the first eight minutes of the game as the Thunderwolves opened up a three-goal lead before the midway mark of the first period. Andrew Wilkins scoring first with a two minute advantage at 2:29, and Ryan McDonald scored less than a minute later to open a two goal lead. Then at 7:59 Mike Quesnele scored a goal assisted by McDonald and Mitch Fillman.
Windsor got on the board with its first of three powerplay goals on the night when
Cory McGillis beat Alex Dupuis with a 5-on-3 advantage. The first period ended with the Lancers down 3-1, after being outshot 14-10.
The second period remaining scoreless until Adam Sergerie beat Windsor netminder
Parker Van Buskirk at 17:19 to give the Wolves a 4-1 lead heading into the third. Windsor narrowly outshot Lakehead 11-10 in the middle stanza.
The Lancers took advantage of Lakehead penalty trouble in the third period, as Spencer Pommels notched a powerplay marker, and his first OUA goal, at 5:15 to make it a 4-2 game. The Lancers added another goal with the extra man with only six seconds remaining on a blast by Brent Oliphant.
Windsor outshot Lakehead 9-7 in the final frame, but were edged by Lakehead 31-30 in shots on goal for the game.
On Saturday night, the Thunderwolves doubled up on the Lancers to take a 4-2 win.
For the second straight night, Lakehead built a quick lead to start the game. Adam Sergerie put the visitors on the board just 0:58 seconds into the game, and then just 20 seconds later Sergerie and Trevor Gamache set up Ryan McDonald to put Lakehead up 2-0.
Lakehead extended its lead to 3-0 at 8:41 of the second period when Sergerie potted his second goal of the game.
Mark Thorburn cut the gap to 3-1 when he blasted one past Wolves' goalie Alex Dupuis at 13:42, and then Spencer Pommels scored on the powerplay at 18:27 to make the score 3-2 for Lakehead going into the final frame.
In a closely contested third period both teams were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances until the final minute when Lakehead secured their win with a goal from Devin Welsh.
Windsor will travel to Toronto next weekend to take on the York Lions in a weekend doubleheader at Canlon Ice Sports.
