Box Score The No. 10 ranked Windsor Lancers Women's Hockey team was eliminated from the post season in a 2-1 double overtime thriller by the Queen's Gaels on Saturday night in Kingston.
The loss came in a one-game OUA quarter-final contest, meaning the Lancers are now out of the playoff hunt.
On Saturday night, the first period saw both teams come out with intensity as they each looked to establish a rhythm. Both goaltenders, Windsor's Jamie Tessier and Queens' Mel Dodd-Moher, were busy as they held the opposition off the scoresheet in the opening frame.
With the Gaels shorthanded, the Lancers finally broke the deadlock halfway through the second period when Courtney Spoors put a loose puck past Dodd-Moher in the slot.
The Gaels came close to equalizing several times after the Windsor goal but ultimately could not solve Tessier who stood tall under pressure for Windsor.
The third period was played at an exciting pace and saw only one whistle in ten minutes of action. With the Lancers' Canadace Kourounis in the penalty box for roughing, the Gaels' Brittany McHaffie tipped a shot past Tessier to put Queen's on the board and tie the game at 1-1.
McHaffie's goal would be the lone marker in the third period as the two teams would need overtime to find a winner.
Overtime continued to be tightly contested with each team generating a number of quality chances. However neither team could muster the winning goal in the first overtime period, sending the game into a second overtime.
At just over the halfway mark of the second overtime, the Lancers found themselves in the penalty box, giving the Gaels the man advantage at crucial time.
On the ensuing play, Queens' Kelsey Thompson accepted a pass just inside the face-off dot and tucked the puck past Tessier to give the Gaels the 2-1 double overtime win and spot in the next round of the playoffs.
The Lancers outshot the Gaels 47-43 in the game. Jamie Tessier made 41 saves in net for Windsor.
