Lancers split first road trip of the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancer women's hockey team split a pair of weekend road games. Windsor dropped a 5-4 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon before rebounding on Sunday to defeat the Ryerson Rams 4-2.

Windsor jumped out to an early lead on Saturday as they got two goals from Alyssa Baldin and Bree Polci. The Blues, however, responded quickly a tied up the game at two heading into the second period.

Jillian Rops scored her second goal of the season to give Windsor a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.

With the game tied at three with just over five minute remaining in the middle frame, the Varsity Blues scored on an empty net to take a one goal lead to end the period.

In the third, the Blues scored the eventual winner at 5:44 of the period on Lancer goaltender Karlyle Robinson. Ally Strickland connected for Windsor on a powerplay in the latter half of the third, but the team was unable to connect with the back of the net again.

On Sunday against Ryerson, the Lancers came out firing as Bree Polci gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead before the Rams had even registered a shot on net.

Ryerson was quick to get on the board in the second, as they tied the game up at one just 46 seconds into the period.

The Rams took a 2-1 off a penalty shot at 6:31 of the period, before Alyssa Baldin blew past a defender caught flat-footed at centre ice and roofed the puck over the shoulder of the Ryerson goaltender to tie the game at twos.

From there, Ally Strickland chipped the puck past the defender at her own blue line and beat everyone down ice. She tucked it home for the short-handed and game-winning goal at 18:08 of the second period.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the third until Candice Chevalier added an empty netter with 18 seconds left to make it a 4-2 final.

Windsor returns home next weekend when they play host to the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon, followed by the York Lions on Sunday. Both games are slated to start at 4:10pm at South Windsor Arena.
