M-Hockey sweeps York for seventh straight win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The No. 7 ranked Lancer men's hockey team earned their seventh straight win with a weekend sweep over the York Lions this weekend at Windsor Arena. The Lancers defeated the Lions 2-0 on Friday night and 4-1 on Saturday.

Windsor is now 10-2-0 on the season and continue to sit in first place in the OUA.

Friday night's win, was the team's third straight shut-out victory. Forward Drew Palmer open the scoring for the Lancers with a power play goal at 13:02 of the first period.

The game remained 1-0 all the way into the third period, as both goaltenders put in solid performances as they kept both teams at bay.

The Lions got into penalty trouble throughout the game, but Windsor's power play unit was unable to capitalize on the opportunities throughout the second and third periods.

In the third, York applied consistent pressure on the Lancers over the entire 20 minutes, but Windsor was able to hold them off the board. In an attempt to tie the game, the Lions pulled goaltender Andrew Perugini in favaour of the extra man with one and a half minutes remaining.

With 0:29 seconds remaining, Windsor finally managed to get the puck out of their zone as captain Brett Vandehogen carried the puck into Lions territory and scored on the empty net to secure the win.

In his second straight shut out appearance, Windsor goaltender Parker Van Buskirk made 26 saves for the win, while Perugini made 19 overall.

In game two Saturday night, the Lions came out hungry and pressured the Lancer defense from early on. Windsor held off the Lions and got on the board first with a power play goal from leading scorer Spencer Pommells at 8:16 of the opening period. Assists were credited to Evan Stibbard and Steve Ferry.

Windsor's shut out streak came to an end when Lions leading scorer Jesse Messier tied up the game just before the end of the period at 19:33 on a York power play.

The Lancers exploded in the second period scoring three unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-1 lead after forty minutes of play.

Evan Stibbard opened the scoring early in the period at 3:42. Captain Brett Vandehogen added his fourth of the season at 9:50, and Pommells followed that up just 0:22 seconds later with his second of the game for the three goal lead.

The Lions came back to life in the third period, but Windsor goaltender Van Buskirk prevented the visitors from finding the back of the net.

The Lancers will now head out of town for the long trip to Thunder Bay, where they will face the Lakehead Thunderwolves (8-4-2) for a pair of games.
