Box Score 2 The Lancer men's hockey team split a weekend series with the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, ON over the weekend.
Windsor opened the series with a 4-2 loss on Friday night, but rebounded on Saturday to defeat the Wolves 7-4 at Fort Williams Gardens.
On Friday night, the play was pretty even start to the game, as both teams were playing a cautious at first. It wasn't until Matt Caria chipped the puck past Windsor netminder
Parker Van Buskirk at 11:59 of the first that things started to pick up.
Windsor almost tied it up at the end of the first, but Lakehead goaltender Alex Dupuis made a huge save on OUA leading scorer Spencer Pommels to keep the Thunderwolves up 1-0.
Luke Judson increased Lakehead's lead to 2-0 just 35 seconds into the second period on a wrist shot he labeled top corner over Van Buskirk's shoulder.
At 6:36 of the second, Trevor Gamache increased Lakehead's lead to 3-0.
Windsor got on the board at 12:25 on a shot from
Drew Palmer that found its way past Wolves' goalie Alex Dupuis.
In the third,
Evan Stibbard pulled the Lancers to within one goal on a shot that bounced up and over Dupuis and just squeaked into the net, making it 3-2.
With less than five minutes to go in the game, Trevor Gamache restored Lakehead's two goal lead making the final score 4-2 for the Thunderwolves.
On Saturday, Lakehead started off hot and held a 3-0 lead over the Lancers before they had even played ten minutes.
Windsor came storming back in what was an offensive opening frame.
Drew Palmer beat Wolves' netminder Alex Dupuis with a clean wrist shot on the power-play at 9:05, making it 3-1.
Brett Vandehogen then pulled the Lancers to within one as he buried a cross-ice feed that Dupuis had no chance on.
At 2:11 of the second period,
Drew Palmer buried his second goal of the game on a shot that Dupuis didn't have much of a chance on, tying things up 3-3.
With two Lakehead players in the box, Windsor capitalized on a 5-on-3 power-play to pull ahead 4-3 on a goal from
Drew Palmer, his third of the game.
The scoring didn't stop there as Spencer Pommels made it 5-3 for the Lancers, again on the power-play at 10:50 of the second.
With a steady parade to the Lakehead penalty box,
Evan Stibbard hammered home a shot past Dupuis on yet another 5-on-3 power-play for the Lancers, increasing their lead to 6-3 at 18:57 of the second.
At 5:15 of the third period, Matt Caria made it 6-4 on the power play with a huge blast from the slot.
Windsor sealed the game with a late empty-net goal from
Brett Vandehogen, giving the Lancers a 7-4 victory and the weekend split.
Windsor will return home for the final weekend of action before the Christmas break. They will host the Guelph Gryphons on Friday November 30th and Saturday December 1st at 7:30pm at Windsor Arena.
