Lancers fall to Hawks in nine-round shootout

Box Score The Lancer women's hockey team was narrowly edged by the No.6 Laurier Golden Hawk 3-2 after a nine round shootout on Saturday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

Brittany Crago, who had also scored in regulation, avoided Windsor netminder Karlyle Robinson's poke check and scored into the open side to give the Golden Hawks the win.

In what was a very entertaining game, the Lancers got off to a flying start as they scored less than two minutes in on a goal by Bree Polci. Windsor would continue to control the play in the opening 20 minutes and took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room, outshooting the Hawks 11-8.

The Hawks would slowly chip away against the Lancers in the second period and tied the game up with less than 30 seconds left.

The tie was short-lived though as a defensive breakdown by Laurier led to Alyssa Baldin scoring the go-ahead goal just 53 seconds into the period. However, Laurier answered right back when Laura Brooker scored just two minutes later to tie the game at two.

Neither team found the winning goal in the rest of the third period or overtime so the two teams headed to a shootout. Both teams would score in the second and fourth rounds before Robinson and Laurier goalie Kayla Brown shutdown the rest of the shooters until the ninth round. After Brown turned away Krysten Bortolotti, Crago would play the hero giving Laurier their 12th win of the season.

Robinson stopped 26 of 28 shots in the loss.

Windsor will face Waterloo on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
