Lancers close out first half against Queen's

WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team will end its first half of the season on the road this Friday night in Kingston, Ont., where they will take on the Queen's Gaels.

Coming into their final inter-division match, the CIS No. 8 ranked Lancers hold a 4-2 record which places them at the top of the OUA West division.  While Windsor has been relatively successful against East division opponents, the rest of its division counterparts all hold a sub .500 record while there are five teams on the other side of the bracket that have recorded five wins or more.

This includes the undefeated No. 10 Ryerson Rams (6-0) who handed Windsor its first home loss of the season last Friday evening at the St. Denis Centre.  However, the Lancers were able to rebound for an 82-64 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday thanks in part to Lien Phillips fifth double-double of the season (15 points, 13 rebounds).

The native of Grenada is one of three players in the conference currently averaging double-doubles, as Phillips is picking up 15.2 points per game and 10.8 boards per game, and is leading the Lancers in both categories.  Fellow conference all-star Josh Collins (Toronto) is adding 13.8 points per game for Windsor, who is currently two wins ahead of the second-place Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) heading into the weekend.

Windsor will go up against an upstart Queen's squad that has already surpassed its win total from last year.  Once the basement dwellers of the East with a 2-20 in 2011-12, the Gaels have streaked to an impressive 5-1 record through the first three weekends of the season.  Queen's has been lead by guard Greg Faulkner, who currently ranks in the nation's top ten in both scoring and rebounding.  Faulkner is averaging 19.7 points per game, placing him third in the OUA, and is pulling down 9.5 rebounds per game.

The Lancers will be looking to pick up a fifth win heading into the holiday break to maintain some breathing room in the West, while the Gaels are just one win back of the East division-leading Rams.  Queen's is 2-0 at home, while the Lancers are 2-1 on the road so far this season.

The Gaels will welcome Windsor this Friday for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
