Box Score 2 TORONTO - The Lancer men's hockey team swept a weekend series against the #9 Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto over the weekend. On a three game win streak, Windsor defeated the Blues 5-2 on Friday night at Varsity Arena and followed it up with a 3-1 win on Saturday.
The Lancers are now 6-2 on the season, and 5-0 on the road, to sit in second place in the OUA.
In game one Friday night, Windsor once again scored four unanswered goals to come from behind and take the 5-3 win.
After a scoreless first period, special teams took over in the second with a total of eight penalties combined between the two teams.
The Blues jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by striking on the man advantage.
Windsor responded just over a minute later on a Blues turnover during even strength play.
Spencer Pommells stole the puck at the blue line and broke in alone. Blues goaltender Garrett Sheehan kicked out the right pad on the initial shot, but Pommells managed to grab the rebound and bury it to tie the game at one.
Toronto would regain the lead with another power play goal at 12:53 of the second, and then take a two goal lead midway through the period on a shorthanded goal from Michael Markovic.
The Lancers finally connected on the power play and scored two goals late in the second period to knot the game at 3-3. Sheehan was pulling out all the stops on the strong Lancer offence, but
Drew Palmer found his own rebound to tie the game at three.
Then, with just under three minutes remaining in the third, Windsor captain
Brett Vandehogen deflected a shot en route to the net, and then buried his own rebound to give the Lancers their first lead of the game.
The Varsity Blues pulled their goalie for the man advantage, but
Evan Stibbard found the back of the net to secure the 5-3 win.
Pommells and
Steve Ferry led the Lancer with a goal and three assists each.
Parker Van Buskirk earned the win in net for the Lancers with 36 saves.
Looking for the sweep, the Lancers again played another solid game to earn the 3-1 win.
After a scoreless opening period, Windsor opened the scoring with a power play goal by Stibbard at 7:04 of the period.
The Blues scored their lone goal of the game at 9:59 of the game period to tie the game at one.
The Lancers' special teams was on fire again as Pommells scored his second of the weekend with a power play goal at 15:04 of the middle frame.
Trailing 2-1 lead late in the third, the Blues again pulled their goaltender in favour of the man advantage. Windsor's defense held strong against the extra main, as Pommells then earned his third point of the night setting up Stibbard's second goal of the game with an empty net with five seconds in regulation.
Van Buskirk had another great night between the pipes with 29 saves in the game.
Windsor will return home next weekend, when they host the RMC Paladins for a pair of games on November 9th and 10th. Both games are at 7:30pm at Windsor Arena.
