WATERLOO, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team opened up their 2013-14 campaign with a pair of losses on the road this past weekend, but picked up their first point of the year in an overtime loss to Waterloo on Sunday.
Opening the season against the CIS No. 3 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks was a challenging draw for the women, as the Lancers went down early and could not recover, falling 5-2 on Friday, October 4. After surrendering four first period goals to the Golden Hawks, the women were able to get back into the game in the middle frame.
Jenny MacKnight notched her first of the season early in the second period, and
Candice Chevalier cut the lead in half a few minutes later.
However, the women ran into a hot Golden Hawks goaltender as Amanda Smith turned aside 38 of 40 shots to solidify a 5-2 Laurier victory.
Marissa Kozovski stopped 20 of 25 shots in her Blue and Gold debut.
The women looked to regroup the following afternoon, and jumped on a 2-1 lead after one period of play against Waterloo.
Andrea Benac found the goal to open the scoring, and Chevalier tallied her second of the year before the home team got within one on the power-play late in the period.
After
Jillian Rops put Windsor up by two again in the middle frame, the Warriors stormed back with a couple of goals in the third to send the game into overtime. Stephanie Digness scored her second of the contest just 24 seconds in on another Waterloo power-play, completing the comeback and sending the Lancers home without an opening weekend win.
Ingrid Sandven turned aside 24 of 28 shots in a losing cause for Windsor.
The women return to South Windsor Arena for their home opening weekend this Saturday and Sunday. The Lancers will host UOIT on Saturday before doing battle with York on Sunday. Both games are set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
