Box Score 2 The No. 9 Lancer men's hockey team earned their 8th straight win with a weekend sweep over the Nipissing Lakers in Sudbury, ON.
The Lancers earned a convicing 5-1 win over the host team on Friday night, before registering a 5-3 win on Saturday. With the wins, Windsor is now 8-1 in regular season play and in first place in the OUA west division.
On Friday,
Spencer Pommells and
Evan Stibbard led the Blue & Gold with four points apiece, while
Parker Van Buskirk earned the win in net making 19 saves.
Taylor Speed shared the goaltending duties with Van Buskirk and made 10 saves in the third period.
Nipissing dominated a fast paced first period and held a 1-0 lead after the first period. Matt Paton scored his fifth goal of the season with just a minute in a half left in the frame.
The Lancers lit up the score board in the second with four unanswered goals. Pommells scored his first of the game at 2:55 of the period, before rookie
Julian Luciani scored his third of the season at 10:16.
Stibbard continued the scoring for Windsor at 17:25 and Pommells scored his second of the game two minutes later to close out the second period.
With new goalies on each end of the ice in the third period,
Curtis Longland scored his first OUA goal on a pass from Kevin Blondeel and
Ryan Crevatin at 5:29 to round of the scoring.
In game two of the weekend series, Nipissing once again got on the board first with a Grant Toulmin goal before the Lancers scored the next four to hold a comfortable 4-1 lead heaading into the final frame.
Kenny Bradford opened the scoring for Windsor with a power play goal early in the second period, and
Derek Lanoue added his own power play goal at 16:09 on a pass from
Matt Beaudoin and
Richard Cameron.
Windsor scored two quick goals in 75 seconds to open the third period.
Spencer Pommells scored the team' s third straight power play goal, and this third of the weekend, just thirty seconds into the frame. Captain
Drew Palmer then added his fourth of the season, 45 seconds later to give Windsor a comfortable three goal lead.
The Lakers attempted a comeback with goals about three minutes apart by Conor O'Donnell and Dorian Peca, but Lancer goaltender Van Buskirk was solid in net denying them the equalizer.
MacCauley McDonnell then added another goal with just over a minute remaining in the game to secure the win.
Windsor returns home next weekend for a weekend series against the UQT Patriots. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm on both Friday and Saturday night at South Windsor Arena.
