Lancers earn huge win over No. 3 Mustangs

Box Score The Lancer men's hockey team earned a very important win on Saturday night with a 3-2 victory over the No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs in London.

With the win, the Lancers are now 17-9-1 and just one point out of second place. A win against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday would lock up the second place position.

Western got on the board early with a goal from Zach Harden at 4:30 of the opening period. The Lancers had some good chances on the power play but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities.

Near the end of the period the Lancers scored two even strength. Windsor tied it up at 16: 07 with an unassisted goal from Derek Lanoue. Dan Reaume then scored his first goal of the season to give Windsor the 2-1 edge at 18:13 of the opening period.

However, juts 0:31 later, Adam Stoykewych tied it up for the Mustangs to close out the period tied 2-2.

In the second both teams came out flying looking to break the tie, but with no luck. The Lancers had two power play opportunities in the period but were held off the scoreboard by the Mustangs. Both teams had scoring chances, but neither team was able to capitalize.

Windsor had several scoring chances throughout the third, but was unable to get past John Cullen until the later stages of the third period. Matt Beaudoin accepted a pass from Kenny Bradford and Reaume to give the Lancer the one goal lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.

The Mustangs poured it on in the last five minutes hoping to send the game to overtime, but were unable to beat the Windsor netminder Parker Van Buskirk who stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced, as the Lancers defeated the Mustangs 3-2.

Windsor will close out the regular season against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at 5:30pm at the Columbia Ice Field. Stay tuned to www.goLancers.ca for all playoff information as it becomes available.
