OSHAWA, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team continues their New Year hot streak, going up by four early and holding off a UOIT comeback bid in the final period to earn a 4-3 victory on Friday evening.
The win moves Windsor (10-7-1) two points ahead of the Ridgebacks, as the Lancers sit sixth in the OUA heading into Saturday's matches. The women are two points back of the rival Western Mustangs but have opened up an eight point margin between themselves and non-playoff teams in the conference.
Candice Chevalier and
Jenny MacKnight each picked up first period goals to put the Lancers up 2-0 after 20 minutes of play. MacKnight would add an assist on
Bree Polci's 10th of the season to increase her OUA-leading point total to 31. Chevalier added her second of the game on the power-play and eighth of the season to give the women a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.
However, the Ridgebacks came out blazing in the third, scoring two goals 2:11 apart within the first five minutes of the period to come within striking distance of Windsor with plenty of time left in regulation. UOIT added another goal with just under a minute to play, but could not come up with the tying marker, allowing the Lancers to escape with the full two points. Â
Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power-play.
Marissa Kozovski stopped 21 of 24 shots to earn her eighth win of the season.
The Lancers will look for their fourth win in a row on Saturday evening north of Toronto where they will take the ice against the York Lions. Puck-drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
Windsor has one more road game following their match with York, as they head to Western on January 25 before closing out their season with a four-game home-stand beginning against Toronto on January 31.
