Spencer Pommells scored the lone goal of the shoot-out and
Parker Van Buskirk made all three saves to lift the Lancer men's hockey team to an impressive 3-2 win over the NCAA Division 1 Michigan State Spartans on Tuesday night at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, MI.
Â
Van Buskirk made 43 saves in the victory, while Pommells led the Blue and Gold with two goals for their second victory over an NCAA Division 1 opponent under head coach
Kevin Hamlin. The Lancers also previously defeated Princeton University in pre-season action.
Â
After a scoreless first period, Windsor found the back of the net first as Pommells snuck the puck in between the post and the foot of Spartan goaltender Jake Hildebrand to make it 1-0 Windsor at the 2:27 mark of the second period.
Â
MSU responded just two minutes later on a goal by Brent Darnell. MSU defenseman Carson Gatt picked up the puck near the red line and turned into the Windsor zone on the left side. Gatt slid a pass to Darnell across the ice, who got the puck past Van Buskirk.
Â
The Spartans made it 2-1 with a power-play goal at the 12:43 mark of the second. Mackenzie MacEachern and Darnell worked the puck around to Boyd at the left point, who snuck a shot past Van Buskirk.
Â
The Spartans nearly took a two goal lead in the third period as a shot rang off the cross bar with just over ten minutes to play in the third period. The missed goal combined with a Windsor power play less than a minute later got the Lancers back into the game as
Matt Beaudoin tied it at 2. A cross-ice pass by
Saverio Posa hit Beaudion in front of the net, who tapped the puck past Hildebrand with 9:23 to play in the third period.
Â
Following a five-minute overtime session, Pommells scored the lone goal of the three-round shoot-out to lift the Lancers over the host Spartans.
Â
Windsor returns to regular season action this weekend as they travel up the 401 for a pair of road games. The Lancers will face the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night at 7:30pm, and Guelph Gryphons on Saturday at 7:30pm. Both games can be seen live at
