WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the New Year, falling to the CIS No. 9 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 on Friday evening at South Windsor Arena.
The loss drops the Lancers (11-8-1) to seventh-place in the conference standings heading into their match-up with the Ryerson Rams (5-16-1) on Saturday evening. The Blues improve to 16-5-1 and hold down fourth-place after Friday's games.
It was Windsor's first conference loss in 2014, as the women had a four-game win streak snapped. The Lancers boast a 5-4-0 record as the home team this season. It was also the home team's second straight loss to Toronto, who defeated Windsor 3-1 at Varsity Arena on November 2.
The Blues opened the scoring under two minutes into the first period on Sonja Weidenfelder's seventh of the season. However, Windsor evened the game at the 14:02 mark of the second period as
Candice Chevalier notched her ninth on an assist by
Candace Kourounis.
Kelly O'Hanlan broke the stalemate just over five minutes into the final period.
The Varsity Blues were 0-for-4 on the power-play, while the Lancers were 0-for-2.
Marissa Kozovski turned aside 23 shots in a losing cause for Windsor, and Nicole Kesteris made 18 saves before giving way to Michaela Logan, who stopped all eight of her shots in just under 19 minutes of relief.
The Lancers will look to split their weekend this evening when they host the Rams at South Windsor Arena. In the only meeting between the teams this season, Windsor notched a 3-1 victory at Mattamy Athletic Centre on November 1. Puck-drop is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be available live at
