Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's volleyball team's playoff hopes suffered a blow on Saturday afternoon, as the upstart Nipissing Lakers notched a 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19) victory over the men at the St. Denis Centre.
The Lancers (6-11) are currently tied for the final playoff spot in the conference with the Queen's Gaels (6-11), who also lost on Saturday afternoon but hold the head-to-head tie breaker after claiming two five-set victories in the season series. The Lakers (5-12) may move from spoiler to steal a playoff spot if they can keep their current momentum going throughout their final schedule. Nipissing topped Queen's last weekend, and sit just one win back of the Gaels and Lancers heading into Sunday's match-ups.
Gabriel Burlacu led the way for the Lancers, tallying a team-best 16 kills while
Greg Simone chipped in with 12 kills. Middle
Adam Thompson recorded seven kills and
Blase Wasser garnered a game-high 16 digs in a losing cause for the men, who hold a home record of 3-6.
Frankie Edgecombe tallied a contest-high 18 kills and worked at a .389 hitting efficiency for the Lakers. Cameron Branch added 16 kills in helping Nipissing record its third-straight victory.
With three games remaining, two of which are against teams with winning records, the Lancers will be looking to steal a victory from either the York Lions(12-4), who they play on Sunday, or Waterloo (14-3) in their season finale on the road. Their game against the Guelph Gryphons (5-12) next Saturday is a must-win, as the Gaels close out their schedule against the winless RMC Paladins (0-17), Ryerson Rams (10-7) and Toronto Varsity Blues (5-12).
Sunday's match-up with the Lions will be preceded by the men honouring their graduating athletes in a special ceremony before the game. The contest will be available live online at
