Women's Hockey drops game one to Gaels

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Lancer women's hockey team lost game one of the OUA quarter-finals 2-1 to the Queen's Gaels on Thursday night at South Windsor Arena.

With the loss, Queen's takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. The remainder of the series will be played at the Kingston Memorial Centre in Kingston, with game two scheduled for Saturday night at 7:30pm, and if necessary, game three will be played on Sunday at 7:30pm.

Windsor's Adalena Tridico scored in the final minutes of the third period to cut the Queen's lead to one, but the visitors held on for the win.

In a scoreless first period, the Lancers came up with a few quality shots towards Gaels starting netminder Mel Dodd-Moher with their two power plays in the period but were unable to get past their starting goaltender.

Queen's was unable to convert on their two power play opportunities as well with the penalty kill units of both teams proving their worth.  Queen's held a 12-5 advantage in shots after the first.

In the second period, Windsor controlled the play in the Queen's end for much of the first half of the frame.

On a Queen's power play, Gaels forward Clare McKellar fired a shot on goal with the puck bouncing off the pad of Lancer goaltender Marissa Kozovski, and right to a wide-open Kyla Crouse at the side of the goal for an easy tap in goal.

The Gaels once again outshot Windsor in the second period 12-9.

Only 2:23 into the third period, Courtenay Jacklin scored off the back-hand to out the Gaels up by two.

The Lancers had a power play chance late and were finally able to solve Dodd-Moher with Tridicio's goal bringing the Lancers to within one with 3:53 remaining.

Windsor pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker but to no avail as they head to Kingston down one game to none.

Kozovski made 32 saves in net for the Blue & Gold, while Dodd-Moher stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win.

Windsor will look to even the series on Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre. The puck is set to drop at 7:30pm on Saturday night. Stay tuned to goLancers.ca for updates.
