With the game tied 2-2, Windsor had an explosive start to the third period with two goals in under five minutes. Player of the game
Kenny Bradford opened the period with his first of the CIS championships at 1:07 putting Windsor up by one. Windsor cycled the puck in the Axemen's zone before Spencer Pommels set up Bradford for a one-timer that beat Acadia netminder Evan Mosher on the glove side.
Just over three minutes later,
Mike Christou added to the Lancer lead, as the forward received a pass from Cameron in the neutral zone, and streaked down the right wing before beating Mosher through the legs.
Van Buskirk had a strong third period making a number of key saves down the stretch. Bradford was called for tripping late in the game. Liam Heelis, the CIS player of the year, had a great opportunity on the resulting power play when a loose puck careened to him at the side of the net, but Van Buskirk was able to stretch out his right pad and make the toe save.
Acadia's Mike Cazzola got the Axeman on the board just 1:19 into regulation. Cazzola's shot deflected off the glass behind the Lancer net, bounced off of the back of Lancer goaltender
Parker Van Buskirk and across the red line to give Acadia the early lead.
Windsor got on the board with a great goal by
Richard Cameron. Cameron accepted a pass from
Myles Doan in the slot and fired the puck right over the shoulder of Acadia goaltender Evan Mosher, tying the game at one.
The Axemen once again scored a quick goal to open the second period with a goal from Liam Heelis at 1:43. Cazzola earned his second point of the night sliding the puck across the crease to Heelis who chipped it behind Van Buskirk for the one goal lead.
Windsor had a number of scoring chances throughout the period but were unable to capitalize on them. The Blue & Gold slide one through Mosher's pads and through the crease, but had no one there to finish it off.
The Lancers' efforts finally paid off as they converted on their first power play opportunity of the game. Captain
Drew Palmer found a rebound from a play started by
Spencer Pommells and
Saverio Posa at 12:43.
The game headed into the final frame tied at two after the Axemen had a goal called off as a result of a goaltender interference call.
The Lancer's improved to 8-1 in the post season and continued to turn heads.
"Not a lot of people knew about the University of Windsor Lancers before this tournament," said head coach
Kevin Hamlin. "To be honest I don't care if they know us by name at the end of it but they will know who the Lancers are. We've had some lean times through the course of this season but we have battled together and battled through."
"Playing as an underdog team has been working for us all playoffs," added Palmer, captain of the Lancers.
After a slow start in the first period, the Lancers managed to edge the Axemen in shots 28-27. Van Buskirk was solid in net for Windsor making 25 saves, while Mosher had 24 for Acadia.
Windsor will now face the host Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night at 7:00pm MT (9:00pm ET) live on Sportsnet 360.
