CALGARY (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Thursday the coaching staffs that will lead the Canadian men's and women's hockey teams at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain.
The Lancers are proud to have women's hockey head coach
Jim Hunter named as an assistant coach for Team Canada's women's team.
2015 Winter Universiade website:
http://www.granada2015.org/en/ "This is a tremendous opportunity not only for me but the University as well," said Hunter. "I look forward to the working with the best women's hockey players across the CIS, and helping to get the University of Windsor name out in the hockey community across the world."
Longtime Saskatchewan Huskies head coach Dave Adolph will lead the men's hockey team, while Jon Rempel of the University of Manitoba Bisons will serve as bench boss for the Canadian women's team. Both the Canadian men and women will be defending their gold medals won last December in Trentino, Italy.
At the biennial multi-sport event, which will run from Feb. 4-14, Canada will be represented in men's hockey by a team comprised entirely of players from the Canada West conference, while the women's hockey team will be an all-star squad selected from across CIS.
Since 1997, selections from each of three CIS leagues have sported the Maple Leaf jersey on a rotating basis in men's hockey. The Canada West crew captured bronze medals in 1997 and 2003, as well as silver in 2009 and will look to recapture the top step of the podium after the Atlantic University Sport team won gold in 2013.
Adolph will lead the Canadian team for the second time in his career after winning that bronze medal in 2003. He will be joined on the staff by Team Leader Todd Johnson (Regina), Associate Coaches Mark Howell (Calgary) and Mike Sirant (Manitoba), as well as Video Coach Spiros Anastas (Lethbridge). Chris Linder (Calgary) and T.J. Mussbacher (Alberta) will serve as equipment managers and athletic therapists.
"It's a true privilege to have the opportunity to represent my University at the Winter Universiade," said Adolph, who took over the Huskies program in 1993 after four seasons at the University of Lethbridge. "The opportunity to coach the best players in Canada West does not come around very often, and I am looking forward to the challenge of coaching this group."
Adolph, who led the Huskies to an appearance in the championship game on home ice at the University Cup last March, sits just 10 conference wins from breaking the all-time CIS record set by legendary Alberta head coach Clare Drake with a record of 368-275-57 in his career. In addition to his Universiade experience, Adolph was also head coach for Canada at the Nagano Cup in 1996 and an assistant at the 2004 Lotto Cup in Slovakia.
Canada has tallied an impressive 13 medals in 14 all-time appearances at the Universiade men's hockey tournament, including four gold, three silver and six bronze.
In addition to the titles won by the all-AUS team in 2013 and 2007, both in Italy, Canada was crowned in 1991 in Sapporo, Japan, while represented by the senior national squad, and in 1981 in Jaca, Spain, when the University of Alberta Golden Bears wore the Maple Leaf uniform.
On the women's side, the Canadians will head to Spain as the three-time defending gold medallists, having reached the pinnacle of the podium each time the competition has been offered as a Universiade sport, beginning in 2009. In their most recent triumph, Canada dominated Russia with a 5-0 victory in 2013 at Trentino, Italy.
Rempel, a two-time Canada West coach of the year who has led the Bisons to five CIS championship appearances, will be assisted by Bruce Donaldson (UPEI) and
Jim Hunter (Windsor) with the Canadian women's team. Kelsie Graham from the Saskatchewan Hockey Association will serve as team leader, while Jean Huynh of McGill (equipment) and Nadine Smith from Carleton (athletic therapy) round out the support staff.
"I am extremely proud to be representing our country, CIS, the University of Mantioba, and Bison women's hockey at such a prestigious event as the Winter Universiade," said Rempel, who will enter his 11
th season with the Bisons this fall. "It is an honour for me to have the opportunity to work with a great staff including Bruce and Jim, a great support staff, as well as what will be an outstanding group of student-athletes. We are all looking forward to carrying on a great tradition of performances by team Canada at all different levels of international women's hockey."
The team selections for both men's and women's hockey will be conducted through the fall and announced late this year.
