Iwanicka announces 2020-21 recruiting class

Women's hockey head coach Deanna Iwanicka is pleased to announce her 2020-21 recruiting class.

Joining the Lancers on the ice next season are goaltender Holly Borrett, defensemen Lizzie Coleman and Devynn Dion, and forwards Gabriella Goodall, Jaden Cherry, and Abbey Campbell.

"We are thrilled about our recruit class," said Iwanicka. "We are bringing in U18 Provincial level players, and those who are regarded as top players in their leagues.  Our focus is now shifting from culture to skill, as we build a championship program."

With the graduating of Molly Jenkins in net, Coach Iwanicka is looking to fill an important spot on her roster. Borrett comes to the Lancers from Sturgeon County, Alberta where she has played the last three seasons for St. Albert Slash. She helped backstop the Slash to three straight Esso Cup Championships and was named the team's defensive player of the year. Last year, she represented Team Alberta at the 2019 Canada Games.

On the blue line, Lizzie Coleman will provide an additional line of defense for the Lancers. Coleman joins Windsor from the Winnipeg Ice of the Manitoba Female Hockey League (MFHL). Coleman has played 93 games during her U18 "AAA" career and was named a MFHL all-star. She is known for her strong defensive play and ability to defend 1-1 however also has the skills to move the puck out of her zone with solid passes and puck control. She also represented Team Manitoba at the 2019 Canada Games.

A member of the Greater Vancouver Comets in the British Columbia Female Midget AAA League (BCMAAA), Dion is a versatile athlete who will add a presence on both sides of the puck. The Surrey, BC native was her team's top scoring defenseman, registering 23 points in 21 games and finished fifteenth overall in league scoring. Over her three-year career with the Comets she put up 82 points in 84 games played.

Also from Surrey, Jaden Cherry plays against Dion in the BCMAAA with the Fraser Valley Rush. Cherry leads the Rush in scoring with 39 points (16 goals, 23 assists) in 32 games and is ranked fifth overall in league scoring. In her three years in the league, Cherry has been nothing but impressive offensively netting 87 points in 87 games played and was named a BCMAAA all-star.

Goodall is a multipurpose player joining the Lancers from the Ontario Hockey Academy, where she had 10 points this season. She is a dynamic and versatile player who will be able to fulfill a variety of roles with the blue and gold.

Rounding out the recruiting class is Oshawa's Abbey Campbell. A member of the Toronto Leaside Wildcats, Goodall was third overall in team scoring with 14 points this past season. She is a strong, physical athlete with a strong hockey IQ and like Goodall is versatile in the role she plays on a team.

With the additions of these tremendous recruits, and the greater core and foundation of the 2019-20 roster returning, including the strong leadership duo of Ashley & Amy Maitre, the future is bright for the Lancer women's hockey program.
