Kevin Hamlin, head coach of the Lancer men's hockey team, is pleased to announce the commitment of transfer Anthony Stefano to the blue and gold for the 2021-22 season.
Â
Stefano joins the Lancers after three years with the OUA's Western Mustangs, and will study in the Faculty of Education.
Â
"Anthony is a character guy who understands what it takes to win. He is a guy who can get in quick on the forecheck and pressure the other team's defensemen into making hurried plays," commented Hamlin. "He is a 4-year OHL player who has found a way to create offense no matter where he has played. In his three previous seasons playing for Western, Anthony has been an important player for his team, and we see that continuing here with the Lancers. He will be with us for two years and will ultimately be an excellent teacher."
Â
A U SPORTS academic all-Canadian, Stefano graduated with a degree in kinesiology and helped lead the Mustangs to an OUA bronze medal during the 2019-20 season and earn a berth at the national championships. The Mustangs defeated the Huskies in their first game before the tournament was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
That same year, he captured the OUA's Dr. Randy Gregg Award which is presented to the player who best exhibits outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement.
Â
The Sault Ste. Marie, ON native spent four years in the OHL prior to joining the Mustangs. He split his career with the Peterborough Petes, the Windsor Spitfires, and Barrie Colts. In 249 games played, the left winger amassed 165 points on 65 goals and 96 assists.
Â
Stefano's previous experience in the city of roses left a lasting impression on him, and played a role in his decision to transfer to Windsor. "My time with the Spitfires left me with a lasting impression of Windsor and the community, and this played a big factor in my decision to study at UWindsor," said Stefano. "I was also drawn to its close proximity to Detroit and my hometown in Sault Ste. Marie. I'm looking forward to jumping into a leadership role with the team and making a memorable impact in all aspects of the game, both on and off the ice. I can't wait to get started with coach Hamlin, the rest of his staff, and the team."
