Box Score Back to backs are always challenging and that proved to indeed be the case this weekend when the York Lions hosted the Windsor Lancers at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in Toronto. After a Friday night tilt that required overtime, the Lancers were unable to bounce back to respond to the Lions falling 5-3 on Saturday afternoon in Ontario's capital city.
STATS
Stef Dobrich scored his first goal of the season while
Robbie Burt and Grant Spence also had goals for the blue and gold. Owen Guihula, Brock McLeod, Michael Horon, Xavier Pouliot and Benjamin Evanish all scored for York.
Dakota Lund-Cornish stopped 14 shots that came his way out of 18 pucks fired towards the Lancer netminder in the loss while the final York goal was put into an empty net late in the third period.
GAME FLOW
In the first period, both teams took the ice strong fresh off a four period the night before hungry to find the back of the net first. It was the red and white though that were able to turn on the red light first when Gilhula opened the scoring at 7:24 of the first to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. No other shots were able to beat Lund-Cornish or York's goaltender Carter Serhyenko before the buzzer sounded for the first intermission.
In the second, it was Dobrich who got the first Lancer goal on the scoreboard with his first of the season coming from
Brady Pataki and Anthony Stefano at 2:18 early in the second frame to tie the game up at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, the Lancers struck again to steal the lead from the Lions and go up 2-1 when Burt was able to beat Serhyenko while Windsor was shorthanded. York however remained determined to compete with the Lancers and were able to net another goal later in the period when McLeod put one past Lund-Cornish to knot things up at 2-2.
Despite a fairly equal possession period in the second frame, the third was stalwartly controlled by the Lions who were able to strike the Lancers with a pair of goals from Horon and Pouliot to go up 4-2 within the first half of the final period. However, the blue and gold remained bold when Spence found the back of the net about a minute after the Pouliot goal to give the Lancers hope trimming the deficit down to 4-3.
Unfortunately, though for Lancer fans, they were unable to get the necessary goal to send it to overtime for a second consecutive night when Evanish was able to score into the empty net off a turnover to close out the game 5-3 and achieve weekend sweep over the blue and gold.
