Lancers claim 15 medals at Can Am Classic

The Lancer track & field opened the 2023-24 regular season in grand fashion at the Can Am Classic this weekend at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.
 
Overall, the blue and gold took home 15 medals, including seven gold, four silver, and four bronze. Three Lancers also moved into the Lancer top ten, and two athletes hit auto qualifying standard for the U SPORTS national championships.
 
COMPLETE RESULTS

AJ Stanat led the Lancer men with a pair of gold medals. Stanat started the competition with a first place finish in the men's shot put on Friday night with a throw of 15.88m. Not only did he place claim gold, but the throw moved him into a tie for No. 10 in the Lancers all-time list, while also automatically qualifying him for the U SPORTS national championships in the event.
 
The St. Thomas, ON native followed that up the next morning with a toss of 16.97m in the weight throw on Saturday morning to win his second gold medal in as many days to also move into the No. 3 slot in the Lancer top ten.
 
Jacob Fitzpatrick and Ben Tilson also brought home a pair of medals at the event. Fitzpatrick captured silver in the men's 3000m in a time of 8:31.94, and a bronze in the men's mile with a time of 4:18.69.
 
Tilson brought home gold in the men's 600m with a time of 1:19.91 and was also part of the Lancer 4x200m relay team that claimed silver on Friday night in a time of 1:31.54. Ryan Mahabir, Ian McPhee, and Cameron John-Dunslow rounded out the relay team with Tilson.
 
Caleb Keeling placed first overall in the men's high jump with a height of 2.02m, while Nojah Parker claimed gold in the pole vault with a height of4.85m.
 
On the women's side, senior Mandy Brunet brought home two medals. Brunet automatically qualified for the national championships in the women's triple jump with a jump of 12.39m, finishing first in the event.
 
On Saturday, Brunet placed second in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.60m.
 
Junior Samara Quanz moved into the No. 9 spot on the Lancer top ten in the women's 3000m with a bronze medal time of 9:56.62.
 
Isabella Goveia placed first in the women's 600m with a time of 1:35.06 and helped the 4x400m relay team to a third place finish at 4:03.37. Goveia's teammates on the relay included Nadia Pupatello, Emily Wilke, and Christina Esposito.
 
Pupatello was also a member of the women's 4x200m silver medal time with Maya Metivier, Ashlynn Gascoyne, and Riley Robitaille.
 
Harley Martin rounded out the Lancer medals with a bronze in the women's weight throw on Saturday morning with a throw of 15.86m.
 
UP NEXT
The blue and gold will now head to Ypsilanti, Michigan to the Bob Parks Memorial hosted by Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, January 20th.
