The Lancer Softball team was slated to have a busy weekend, but the weather had a problem with that and only allowed the team to play 1 of their 3 scheduled double headers. On Friday night under the lights, the Lancers split with the Guelph Gryphons, winning 4-2 and losing 8-1.
Â
Game 1:
The first few innings of the windy first game on Friday night were a tight match-up as a pitcher's duel ensued. Both teams were scoreless through 2.5 innings until the Lancers struck first with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3
rd inning on singles from
Aubrey Johnson,
Jayde Melhuish-McGahan,
Cylee Hickey,
McKay Colombe, and an RBI from
Emma Hanley. In the 5
th inning, the Gryphons started battling back and cashed a run, but the blue & gold immediately responded with a
Lauren Hickey single and
Emma Hanley double to bring their lead back to 3. Guelph got 1 more run in the final inning but could not complete the comeback as the Lancers took the first game 4-2.
Jayde Melhuish-McGahan earned the win from the mound, giving up 7 hits, 1 earned run, and striking out 5 players over 7 innings of work.
Â
Game 2:
The Gryphons came out hot in the second game of the doubleheader, cashing 7 runs in the first inning. The Lancers have faced tougher comeback before, but unfortunately could not figure out a tough Guelph pitcher to get those early runs back. Windsor's only run of the game came from a solo homerun from
Jayde Melhuish-McGahan in the 5
th inning. The energy and cheering on the bench did not waver for a minute during the game, regardless of the score, and that will serve them well in future games.
Â
Saturday's games against Laurier and Sunday's games against Waterloo have been postponed due to the rain. The rescheduled dates will be available on goLancers.ca once they are finalized.
Â
The Lancers will be back in action under the lights again next Friday, October 4 when they take on the visiting Brock Badgers at 7pm and 9pm at Mic Mac Park #2.
