The University of Windsor Lancers men's basketball team begins their 2026 OUA Wilson Cup playoff run as they match up against the Guelph Gryphons in Round 1 of the OUA playoffs. Windsor will visit Guelph on Wednesday, February 18 with tip-off set for 8 p.m at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Windsor returned to the playoffs last season and will be looking to improve upon their first round defeat from 2024-25.
The Lancers earned a playoff spot this season with a 12-10 (W-L) conference record, finishing with the second-most wins in a competitive OUA West division and the ninth overall seed in the league. Windsor's season has been marked by balanced scoring and rebounding, ranking solidly across OUA statistical categories, averaging 76.5 points per game with a 42.3% field goal rate while leaning on strong free-throw shooting (.701) and a tough rebounding edge.
Windsor and Guelph split their head-to-head regular-season matchup this season. On Nov. 7, Windsor edged a thrilling 93-91 home victory over the Gryphons that featured Yohann Sam scoring 29 points and Luke Grace netting 23. However, in their January meeting Windsor dropped a 91-79 decision at Guelph in a game which Windsor kept pace early and held a rebounding advantage before a decisive third quarter run from Guelph.
Lancer Things to Know:
- The blue and gold feature balanced frontcourt play: Bronson Chambers, Emanuel Otong, Luke Grace, and Yohann Sam have anchored Windsor's scoring and rebounding all season, each posting strong all-around contributions - especially Chambers with his ability to score inside and on the glass.
- Improved depth: Windsor has distributed minutes evenly across its roster this year, leading to solid assist numbers and turnover control. Their ability to generate points from multiple players helps keep opponents off balance.
- Road warriors: The Lancers won six of ten games away from the Toldo Lancer Centre this season and will look to continue this trend as they will go up against a passionate Guelph crowd.
Guelph Gryphons Snapshot:
- The Gryphons come into the game with a comparable record (12-10) and offensive firepower that gave them the eighth seed to secure home court advantage for this game.
- Guelph's attack is dangerous from both inside and out, as shown in their recent win over Windsor where they shot a strong 47.1% from the field and nearly 47% from three in January.
- Eric Armstrong has been a consistent scoring threat and will be a key focus for the Lancers defence. He averaged 15.0 points this regular season and scored a season-high 33 against Windsor in January.
Head-to-Head History:
Historically, this rivalry has been competitive with close games and split results over recent seasons. The two programs have split their last ten meetings evenly, showing that this playoff matchup should be closely contested and can go either way.
With momentum on the line and both teams familiar with each other's tendencies, this first-round matchup promises intensity and drama. The Lancers will be looking to use their defensive effort, balanced scoring and high energy to claw ahead early and make a run in the OUA playoffs.
