The University of Windsor Lancers men's hockey team continues their national title quest with a semifinal game against the host Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. Atlantic/12 p.m. Eastern at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, N.S.
The No. 4 seeded Lancers earned their semifinal appearance with a 4-3 win over the No. 5 Mount Royal Cougars in the quarterfinals.
Alex Cunningham scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and
Max Donoso made 38 saves to give the blue and gold their first U SPORTS win since the 2013-14 season. This marks the first time Windsor has advanced to the semifinal round in this format, which was reintroduced to the tournament in the 2015-16 season.
The Saint Mary's Huskies come into this matchup with the support of the Halifax faithful behind them. The No. 8 hometown seed knocked off No. 1 Saskatchewan in a thrilling 4-3 overtime win on Thursday night on a goal by defenceman Ethan Ritchie. SMU went 16-10-4 in the regular season, placing fourth in the AUS. They have a high-scoring offense, led by Reid Valade and Ben Allison. The Huskies were swept in two games in the AUS quarterfinals by the UPEI Panthers, but put that rest to good use to punch their ticket to the semifinals.
The Huskies play a very physical game, as they had 518 penalty minutes in just 30 games, and their penalty kill was only effective 79% of the time. The Lancers power play, which clicked at 21.7% in the regular season, may prove to be a factor if they can frequently get on the man advantage and capitalize on SMU's lack of discipline.
