Box Score The Lancer Men's Basketball team turned in one of their best all-around games on Saturday night as they captured the OUA West Championship with a convincing 86-66 victory at home over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Before a capacity crowd at the St. Denis Centre, the Lancers punched their ticket back to the CIS National Championship Tournament to be held in two weeks time in Ottawa.
The Lancers will also head to Carleton next Saturday to compete in the Wilson Cup OUA Provincial Championship game against the Ravens.
On Saturday night, the first quarter lived up to the pre-game hype as both teams hit the court with intensity and ready for battle.
The Lancers held an early 18-12 lead over the Thunderwolves thanks to some solid post play from Nigel Johnson-Tyghter.
In the second quarter, Windsor began to pull away from Lakehead as they used an impressive balanced offensive attack and some fierce defensive pressure to gain control. The Lancers took advantage of a pair of Lakehead technical fouls as Isaac Kuon hit all four free throws to increase the lead to 47-30 at the half.
In the first half, Kuon scored 17 of his game high 23 points to help his team take command of the game.
In the third, the Lancers proved who the the top team in the OUA West was as they came out on fire and turned the game into a blowout.
The Lancers increased their lead at one point to 32 points in the third quarter as the visitors had no answer for their potent offensive attack. Lakehead was held to 11 points in the quarter as Windsor led 71-41 after three quarters of play.
Head Coach Chris Oliver was able to rest most of his starts in the fourth quarter as they easily cruised to the 86-66 victory.
With the win, Windsor captured their second OUA West Championship in four years and sealed their berth at the CIS National Championships in Ottawa on March 19-21.
In the victory, Isaac Kuon led all scorers with 23 points and was named the OUA Player of the Game. Nigel Johnson Tyghter was dominant in the post as he finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Rookies Lien Phillip and Josh Collins each both outstanding on the night as they each finished with 12 points apiece.
Windsor will now travel to Ottawa to play the Carleton Ravens next Saturday night in the Wilson Cup OUA Provincial Championship game.
