University of Windsor Lancers women's basketball player
Leah Tate has been named an OUA Athlete of the Week for her high-scoring performance on the weekend (Nov. 28-29), scoring a total of 57 points as the Lancers closed out the first half of their regular season with two wins on home court.
On Friday night, Tate set the Lancer women's basketball program record for most field goals made in a game with 15, as she shot 15-29 from the field in a 36-point night to lead Windsor to a 77-58 win over the No. 7 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens. The third-year guard's 36 points were the most by Lancer woman in 15 years, tying Jessica Clemençon's 2010 mark for the second-most all-time, just six points shy of Dranadia Roc's 42 set in 2006. Tate's output included a career-high six three-pointers made; her season average of 2.5 three-pointers made per game currently sits fourth all-time in Lancer history. She contributed on both sides of the ball, grabbing four rebounds, four steals, and two assists in 35 minutes of play.
Tate continued to her strong play on Saturday with 21 points, her second-highest scoring game of the season, in a 77-64 win against the defending OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Windsor native added seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists in the Lancers fourth straight win. Her four steals from both games tie season-highs, and her seven rebounds against Ottawa set a new season-best.
Following their two-win weekend before the break, the Lancers now hold a 9-2 (W-L) record for second place in the OUA West division. The blue and gold are now ranked No. 9 nationally, their highest ranking of the season and second week being ranked.
The Lancers host the Manitoba Bisons for a pair of exhibition games at the Toldo Lancer Centre on Jan. 2-3, and resume OUA play with the a stop in London, Ont. on Wednesday, January 7 for the first of four consecutive road games out of the break.
